The Wedding Gown

Surf the web Many websites sell brand-new, name-brand gowns at 20 to 50 percent off retail, and they have the photos to prove it. Quotes can be received via email and there are often monthly specials.

Create a copy Find your dream designer gown ($1,500 and up) and consider having your local seamstress create a copy. The labor and fabric costs will be drastically reduced, particularly if you choose a lighterweight silk or satin.

Something old, something new
Wear your mom’s dress or borrow a friend’s. Get the gown cleaned and altered. Total savings: priceless.

Bridal alternatives An evening gown or a bridesmaid’s dress won’t set you back as much as a bridal gown, and plenty of styles come in white or cream.

Vintage If you have the time and patience to scour the vintage stores, then you might be lucky enough to stumble on a fabulous antique. Dry cleaning and some light repair may be all that’s required to doll up a dress from the era of your dreams.

Outlet stores Plenty of bridal designers have outlet stores. Source the local newspapers and magazines for ideas.

Bridal shows/discount bridal events
Visit the local bridal shows—designers often have show specials that are worth their weight.

Designer sample sales
If you don’t mind wearing a gown that a model has worn for a runway or trunk show, then sample sales are a great money-saving resource. Check your local bridal stores for details.
